Converting Passion to Wealth as the Youths celebrate International Youth Day

12th of August every year is the International Youth Day. It is a day set aside to emphasize the need to increase the opportunities for active participation of the youth in the society to tackle issues related to health,
employment, violence, education,
drug abuse, environment, hunger and poverty. This year 2016, the International Youth Day is centered on the Sustainable Development Goal 12 and the theme is “The Road to 2030: Eradicating Poverty and Achieving Sustainable Consumption and Production”.

There is poverty in many countries of the world which has given rise to hunger and deprivation to quality life. However, the youths who are the most active group of any nation need to be healthy by producing what they consume because when they go hungry, their vulnerability exposes them to many vices that beget sickness and death.
To commemorate the day, Community Youth Development Initiative (CYDI) a Non – Governmental Organization put together a youth conference in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria. The participants were youths who are Students, Entrepreneurs, and Professionals in public and private sectors.  The conference discussed the theme on the global perspective but with strong emphasis on how it relates to the peculiar situation in Nigeria.
The conference identified that Eradicating Poverty and Achieving Sustainable Consumption and Production is possible with the youths’ ability to identify their passion, market for their passion as well as translate their passion into products and avoid waste via sustainable cost of production and via personal life style. These revelations are to be sustained through advocacy and the personal efforts of all participants and stake holders at different spheres of the society.

Achieving this goal is important so as to have a nation that can feed herself and remain healthy as well as avoid her over dependence on international aids. I participated in the conference and I believe that when this goal is achieved, good health and subsequent quality/long life expectancy would be achieved.
