The disease was detected in about 18 councils but later spread to the entire 25 LGAs. Dr. Mohammed Makusidi, the Niger State Commissioner for Health has disclosed that over 150 lives have been lost to cholera across the 25 local government areas of the state between April till date.
The Borno State Commissioner for Health, Mrs Juliana Bitrus has confirmed that 43 people have died as a result of cholera outbreak in the state. Bitrus, who made the confirmation at a briefing yesterday in Maiduguri, the state capital, said the state had so far recorded 559 suspected cases.
He emphasized the need to provide clean water supply to all affected communities in order to prevent water-borne diseases among the populace. Katsina recorded the highest number of deaths for the reporting week with 19 deaths, followed by Bauchi with 16, while Niger recorded 7. It has been revealed by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) that the death toll from suspected cholera infections across the country currently stands at 2,035.
